A Very High School SuperBowl Half Time Show with Katy Perry

By MICHELE CALICCHIO

Katy Perry performed at this year’s Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb.1  with all the makings of what should have been an amazing, mind-blowing performance but yet somehow fell flat of doing so.

There were bright lights, sparkling costumes, dancers, changing set pieces and even a dancing shark or two to none the less distract viewers from the terrible vocals for the entire 12 minute performance. The pop singer was joined on stage by two special guests who shined just a little bit brighter then Perry.

Perry made quite the entrance on a giant metal-looking lion through a sea of lights to the stage in the darkness to her power anthem Roar. She stood atop of it in a short gold based flame dress with a matching microphone, dawning a high black pony tail, glittery eyes and bright red lips.

The stage started as a chess board topped with dancers in metallic chess piece costumes that glistened with every moment they made around Perry to Dark Horse. Then out of nowhere guest, Lenny Kravitz is walking out on a different stage, guitar in hand with a band behind him.

He sings a verse of Perry’s song I Kissed A Girl, and she seconds later comes out to join him. She looks out of place with the rocker, flipper her hair and banging her head literally rolling on the floor.

“At this point the performance became anticlimactic and boring. She was barely even singing. It was more of her dancing awkwardly around the stage and making extremely awkward facial expressions,” Caitlin Foley said. Foley is a 21 year old music business major at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. “I don’t know when the Super Bowl performances became like this and we should bring back performances like Tom Petty’s.”

The terrible dancing on Perry’s part continued as she was on a beach themed stage with dancing surf boards, sharks, palm trees, and beach balls in a beach ball bikini-esque outfit. One couldn’t help but feel like they were watching a children’s program as she bopped around the stage doing her peppy, terrible cheerleader like dance moves to “California Girls”.

The real highlight and savior of the half time performance was the surprise guest, Missy Elliot who came out and sang her song “Loose Control” stole the entire show dancing in a club like atmosphere with bright lights and lazer beams. Her dancers were on point, all in sync and then Perry comes out and ruins it starting to dance and even rap. Missy is real, raw talent she keeps up with her dancers and can actually move.

“Missy Elliot was hands down the highlight of the show, everyone who I was watching with jumped out of their seats and was screaming at the same time. She still has it, and she is twice Katy’s size and moves a million times better then she can. I almost wish it would have been just her performing,” Alexa Calicchio said.

Perry’s show finally ended (thank goodness) to her terribly singing her song Firework that one would argue James Franco sang better in “The Interview,” as she rode around the arena on a star.

The performance was nothing special, however if you want to watch a high school-esque cheerleading routine and feel like you’re tripping on acid this performance may be for you. The poor vocals and dancing by Perry ruined the performance, yet Missy Elliot and the dancing sharks managed to save it from being completely terrible. It was fun, it was quirky, and unapologetic which led to most viewers not being a fan.
