Celebrating Women of Distinction

March is Women’s History Month marks the commemoration of the many who have played an integral part in the formation of the United States and its culture. International Women’s Day is March 8 recognizes the achievements of outstanding women around the globe.

In the United States, women have made their voices heard throughout history. From the civil rights movement to the automotive industry, the impact of  160 million women on the country has come in many forms.  This year, the Ramapo Record pays tribute to some of the lesser known pioneers of history.

Mary Barra – the first major female automotive CEO

Zora Neale Hurston – playwright and civil rights activist

Manon Rheaume – the first female NHL player

Yoon Ahn – jewelry designer

Baroness Angela Burdett-Courts – philanthropist and noblewoman

Carrie Brownstein – musician

Claudette Colvin – civil rights activist
