New Office Focuses on Diversity at Ramapo College

By AMAURIS PERALTA MUÑOZ

A new office at Ramapo College of New Jersey aims to promote inclusiveness throughout the community.

The Office of Equity and Diversity Programs continues to create an overall campus climate for all students, faculty, and staff through different programs held at the college. The office strongly believes that diversity is necessary for the success of the institution.

“”The Office of Equity and Diversity really tries very hard to throw programs that will make students of color feel more comfortable on campus,” said Jose Alcantara, a 19-year- old sophomore at Ramapo College. “It was very uncomfortable at first when I was the only student of color in most of my classes, but because of the support, I do not feel any type of way.”

Aside from programs, workshops, and trainings, the office also offers Diversity Peer Educators , a group of student volunteers and leaders who are trained and educated in multicultural awareness and diversity issue. Through this training, the students become more aware of their own identities and biases. The office also runs mentoring programs, where students connect with other students and faculty of color.

One of their biggest services offered is the ‘All Together Different Student Leader Diversity Retreat’ which is an annual event designed to critically examine various issues that relate to living in a multicultural and diverse community.

“The Office of Equity and Diversity’s Welcome Back Kick-Off and mini senior graduation for students of color have to be one of the most impactful programs,” said Joseph Rodriguez, 20, a junior who looks forward to these events every school year.

  1. As a Ramapo College student I found this article to be very informative, and relevant to my interests. I enjoyed how in-depth you went, considering you answered almost every question that came up in my head. I would’ve included where exactly the office is located, but other than that the article was incredibly thorough! The incorporation of quotes by fellow students was also very effective. I would’ve also included why an office like this is necessary amidst our current political climate.
