New York Week Attracts Thousands to City

By EMERY CHILDS

This weekend, the city that never sleeps hosted two long awaited extravaganzas. New York City Fashion week and the All-star game provided incentive for thousands of people to spend one months’ rent for a flight and stay in New York City.

Basketball fans from all over the country and fashion crazed females decorated New York Streets all week. Two worlds shared one concrete jungle.

Could there be any better place to meet a stereotypical match? Although the events may look like a jock meets Barbie breeding ground that is quite the contrary. Some spectators ask if New York was playing cupid just in time for Valentine’s Day or staging another lucrative tourist destination or none of the above.

Fashion Week Frenzy

In New York, fashion is a huge deal. Fashion Week brings in about 547 million in direct visitor spending. Fashion week in New York grosses more than the 2014 Super Bowl, the New York marathon and the US open tennis championship.

Those who are lucky enough to have the runway in plain view are the most envied. The attendees behind the curtains are working, hard. It is routine that before the models hit the stage backstage is a circus. Last makeup touches, tweaks of the garments, and inevitable last minute emergency’s like a model out of order or shoe strap pop are expected. Nonetheless, no matter what happens the show must go on.

This season, much like a slam dunk contest was one for the books. Main stream designers Michael Kors, Diane Von Furstenberg, DKNY, Donna Karen, and Alexander Wang blessed the runway just in time for lent, making giving up that bad shopping habit impossible. Plus size designers continued to emerge this season as the controversy of “what is plus size?” and what does that mean for society continue.

Michael Kors 2015 Fall/Winter line was  inventive. Not only were spectators raving over his designs but the models in his show were causing quite a stir as well. His show featured three of the most sought out celebrity supermodels; Kendal Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Karlie Kloss. This is the season of new, fresh talent.

The West Wins Despite New York’s Home Court Advantage

Young blood dominated the NBA All-Star game as well. Rookie underdog Zach LaVine from the Minnosota Timberwolvs earned his stripes by winning the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. Some fans say this was the most exciting All-Star Game they’ve seen in years. Shane Murphy of Cliffton says “This was the best game in years!”.  All-Star weekend never discriminates and favors only sports fans. This years celebrity game featured hilarious comedian turned movie star Kevin Hart among other Hollywood A-listers. There was an event for everyone. The West ended up taking home the W with the final score of 163-158.

New York Fashion Week and The All- Star Game have one thing in common, New York. New York Knicks star Carmello Anthony says, ““If you love fashion, this is the fashion capital of the world, And if you love basketball, this is the basketball capital of the world.” Although the two worlds were separated by a 15 minute cab ride during the day, at night they joined forces to conquer the madness that is New York City nightlife. Cache’ held it’s fashion week party in the lower east side at hotspot Beauty and Essex. The event was a networking dream; models and designers keekee’d over  signature house cocktails. If any city can couple two seemingly unrelated worlds and create a counter culture leave it to the big apple.

Sunday, attendees migrated to LaGuardia Airport and some to Newark International Airport with sunglasses concealing the bags that were not designer. The lack of sleep was well worth it in exchange for life changing connections.
