Ramapo College Athletes React to Larry Nassar Sentencing

Larry Nassar, former Michigan State University team doctor and an U.S. Olympic team physician, was sentenced last week for an additional 175 years in a federal prison for multiple sex crimes involving minors. This sentence will be served directly after the 60-year sentencing in a state prison that he was already sentenced. It was reported that Nassar sexual abused over 200 females some of which were as young as nine years old.

This has been a hot topic in recent news as well as around college campuses and with athletes. Victoria Cunningham, a senior girl lacrosse player at Ramapo College said, “I am truly disgusted by what this man did. It takes an absolute sick man to even have thoughts to do something like this.”

Nassar began working as an athletic trainer for the USA Gymnastics national team in 1986. His first reported incident of sexual abuse to underage females dates back to 1992. He was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison with the earliest possible release date of March 23, 2069.

On top of that, he was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in a state prison. He will serve his state sentence directly after his federal sentence.

Ramapo College Athletic Trainer Reacts

“I believe he deserves to serve every day of that sentence.  For a medical professional to behave the way he did and mistreat all of those young girls is unequivocally unacceptable,” said Luis Pomales, who is an athletic trainer at Ramapo College.

Since this news became public, Michigan State’s Athletic Director and school president have both decided to step away from the school and resign. They both have claimed to have zero knowledge about what took place at there school for nearly two decades.

“I hope I can leave an everlasting impression on my student athletes; but unlike Larry Nassar, I plan on making mine a positive one,” said Pomales.

  1. Good story. I think you could split the lead and lead ex plainer into two separate graphs. The links provided were effective in adding depth to the story. everything else is good. I like how you got a quote from a student and the athletic trainer to diversify the voices in the story.
