The Food of Super Bowl XLIX

By STEVE SPANOPOULOS

This year Americans witnessed the Seahawks of Seattle battle the Patriots of New England in Super Bowl XLIX.  The game however was not always the highlight of this extravaganza.

Some people watched to see where the amount of money was spent on halftime commercials and some watched to see a top artist perform during the halftime show. Most can agree that the food is always a crucial part.

Is Football the Main Focus?

At one Super Bowl viewing in Palisades Park the food at this 12 person gathering was more than they could handle.  It kicked off with a mix of two types of pizza from the local shop including a sicilian pie and a regular pie.

Stephanie Ost, a 30-year-old resident of Palisades Park said, “I didn’t care who won the game, and I was amazed by the amount of food there was.”

Fans from all teams came together in this four TV living room to watch this much anticipated game.  According to ESPN.com this was the most watched Super Bowl with an estimated 114.4 million households tuning in, the second highest was last year.

One type of food item: a staple in most super bowl parties is the chip.  Chips have found their way into many households one such chip is Doritos.  According to abcnews.com “Americans will scarf down roughly 11.2 million pounds of potato chips, 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips.”

Companies such as PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay who owns Doritos takes advantage of those numbers when buying ad space during the super bowl.  This year they purchased two 30 second spots for about $8 million.

Many Viewers Watch Equipped with a Menu of Super Bowl Eats.

To the friends attending 7th street pub – as they know this house for its location, had wings as another assortment to choose from on their menu.  The wings were split into four flavors.  Of course to follow the trend there wasn’t just one kind of dip but three, a spicy buffalo chicken, four-cheese, and plain salsa.

The Chili was delicious and a good way to warm the body.  Then steak tidbits with chime changa, empanadas in either chicken or beef and finally dessert.

Controversial Call Gives Fans

Seattle got the ball back in the final minutes down 28-24.  With a chance to win they began their game winning drive down the field.  Seattle had two men in mind to carry them to the promise land Russell Wilson, Seahawks quarterback and Marshawn Lynch, Seahawks running back.  They marched all the way down close to the goal line and gave the ball to Lynch who ran to the 1-yard line.

The consensus on most minds was game over; they had three chances to get in the end zone with a top running back.  In aninstant and a bad call Wilson threw a pass that was intercepted by Malcolm Butler, defensive back for the Patriots in the end zone. Game over.

Lefty Elanis, 34, of Palisades Park had this to say “in my 20 years of watching football I have never seen a worse call than that.”

There is no love for the Patriots in this northern New Jersey household and a lot of sad faces but at the same time full bellies.  These football fans will have to just wait for next year.

  1. Interesting story. Pizza, chips, and chicken wings are great Super Bowl meals. I would like to see what else people ordered on Super Bowl Sunday as well as beverages people ordered as well as a small follow up. Apart from the meals, the game ending interception will always remain one of the worst endings in Super Bowl history.
