Village of Hope?

COLUMBIA, S.C.- The small community of Roosevelt Village suffered from rampant crime and neglect throughout their neighborhood. However, a five-figure donation from the Wesley United Methodist Church turned the village from a rundown, derelict area to a beacon of hope within the city of Columbia.

The hundreds of Roosevelt Village residents live in fear of the shootings, drug deals, and other illegal activities that surround the complex on a nightly basis.
Children of Roosevelt Village are deeply affected, losing their innocence younger than any child should. But as they frolicked among the front yards that served as drug dens by night, positive change looms on the horizon.
After years of neglect from the city of Columbia, SC, a $50,000 donation from the Wesley United Methodist Church helped fund the construction of a community center.
"Residents no longer look out their windows and see drug dealers or wake up to criminals being chased by deputies," said Columbia Police Chief Charles Austin.
Since it opened after three months of construction, the "Village of Hope Community Center" has been used for ministries. day-care programs, and other local activities. "This community center is like a rose among the manure," says 5th Circuit solicitor Dick Harpootlian.
Although the community has been transformed, the possibility of reverting back to a state of derelict remains if neglect and crime aren't eradicated.
